Career Experience
I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and quickly developed a fascination with learning about the natural world by exploring my surrounding environment. My studies have included focusses in genetics, genomics, and evolutionary biology. I've taught in both college lab courses and in environmental education settings. During college I volunteered and worked in several education and community outreach programs, studied ecology abroad in Peru, and pursued research in the metabolic development of plants. Through these and other experiences, I solidified my passion for researching and teaching biology. As a graduate student I researched how natural genetic variation influences how genes are expressed when individuals are responding to environmental shifts using baker's yeast. I also mentored undergraduate researchers, served as a student representative on my department's graduate program committee, and taught undergraduate lab-based courses. In my local community, as a science communication fellow and as an educator, I've worked with local stakeholders and policy makers to facilitate discussion on environmental research and policy issues. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked with a local medical testing company to develop and implement high throughput testing assays that processed clinical samples from around the country.
