Career Experience

I spent my first two years as an undergraduate in the English program at a private university. During my sophomore year as an English major, my interest in literature broadened to an interest in how writers influenced current events. I transferred to a larger university's communication program to satisfy my interest in journalism, mass media and the analysis of their impact. I received a B.A. in communications with an emphasis on using programming packages to perform statistical analysis of communications behavior. I entered a graduate degree program in communications where I taught Freshman Rhetoric for a year. I left the graduate program after a year to pursue a career at a multi-national technology corporation. As for my professional background, I worked as a writer and software developer for fifteen years at the technology corporation I joined. At the corporation I wrote business cases, programming specifications and later contributed to external publications meant for both engineers writing third party software and direct users of our software and hardware. At the multi-national computer manufacturer and software provider, I was a staff software engineer, information development coordinator and team leader. After leaving the corporation, I spent a number of years as a consultant writing programming specifications, business procedures, user manuals, and newsletters as well as doing software development and maintenance. Toward the end of my career as a consultant, I began to transition from developer and writer to strictly communications and writing projects. During the last few years, I have focused on communications as a business analyst and obtained an MBA. During the last two years, I have been working as an online tutor.

I Love Tutoring Because

I enjoy seeing students develop into confident, strong communicators through the use of words on paper or speaking in person. My approach to teaching is the result of my experience teaching Freshman Rhetoric at a large Midwest university and over 20 years of writing for large corporations. A student who can write or speak persuasively in support of an opinion or goal has a clear advantage not only in school but also in the workplace. As a teaching assistant at a major university, I ran my own Freshman Rhetoric classes where I taught students to write and speak effectively in preparation for a variety of careers. After leaving the university, I spent years working with information developers at a large multi-national technology corporation producing user manuals intended to teach new technologies to customers. Teaching other professionals and users about technologies through writing is a passion for me. In addition to technical writing, I have been the editor and publisher of a professional newsletter. Using the written and spoken word to communicate and teaching others how to do so through one-on-one tutoring is a continuing ambition of mine.
