Career Experience

I have over 20 years' experience teaching, mentoring, tutoring young people from all ages and all walks of life in and outside of the classroom setting. Beyond my role as an ELA teacher for middle school and high school aged students, I also spent several years teaching GED classes to young adults, as a peer reviewer and interviewer for a teacher fellowship program, and a teacher leader in a NYC high school. I’ve also developed my own curricula and rubrics for the courses I have created. I collaborate well with others, as evidenced in all of the professional partnerships I’ve accumulated over my tenure as an educator. I’ve facilitated small and larger scale workshops, including an online poetry forum that I co-create and lead with three fellow educators of color.

I Love Tutoring Because

by cultivating a rapport with my students, I can foster an environment of mutual respect, clear expectations, a professional yet personable style of connection and honor my students where they are but also hold them accountable to where they can go. Tutoring, one-on-one or small group, provides a space where I can challenge my students to push their academic limits, try new things, and take the risks of making mistakes as a prelude to success.
