Career Experience
As a full English professor (now retired), I taught the following subjects for forty wonderful years at a community college: composition (including essays, interpretive analyses, and MLA and APA research papers), literature (both English and American and all genres), technical writing for the workplace, English as a Second Language (ELL), and dual-credit college composition (online) to high school students in remote locations. I also coauthored an English grammar handbook for use with all college students, but with a special focus on Spanish-speaking students, who comprised 80% of our student body. I finished my Ph.D. twenty years into my teaching career. My doctorate included a large chunk of English Renaissance literature, but primarily focused on rhetoric and composition to expand my knowledge base to better help my students become more competent communicators and writers.
I Love Tutoring Because
I often got frustrated in my many years of teaching classes of 25-30 students per class (and five classes per semester!). I had to aim for the middle and hope that students who were struggling or needed an extra push would come to see me during my office hours, as I religiously encouraged them to do. Unfortunately, that didn't happen as often as I would have liked, so I began volunteering in the Writing Center rather than seeing students in my office--and that's when my students finally started coming to see me! Now that I've been retired for several years, I miss my students, but I'm no longer interested in teaching large classes. Instead, I prefer tutoring students on a one-to-one basis to help them find what they want to say and how to say it so they can get from where they are to where they need to be.
