Career Experience
After 23 years of teaching and research, I recently retired from my position as an associate professor of biology. Prior to this, I was a post-doctoral fellow and a lecturer in ecology and evolution. In addition to teaching various classes ranging from the freshman general biology sequence, to an assortment of botany courses and invertebrate biology, I regularly taught ecology, evolution and invertebrate biology as well as a course on the natural history of the Great Lakes region. I love teaching courses that have field labs, and I am still teaching as an adjunct professor when the opportunity presents itself. I have also mentored nearly 40 research students in field and laboratory studies in ecology and evolution.
I Love Tutoring Because
I always find that the one-on-one and small group approaches to working with students are especially rewarding; in these situations I can discover something about how each student gathers information and processes it - how they learn. I can then use that information to direct my presentation of material towards each student’s skills. I can work with the student until I know they understand the material and can apply the new concepts to other areas of biology. My reward comes from the student’s success stories.
