Career Experience

I began teaching ESL in 1987 and got my MA in applied linguistics. The next thiry years of teaching brought me to France, Spain, Taiwan, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, Japan, and Ecuador. During that time, I tried on different lives, and that got me thinking. In 2007, I returned to the US to complete an MFA in creative writing and have been teaching composition, critical thinking, creative writing, and literature ever since, most recently in Dubai.

I Love Tutoring Because

unlike teaching a group of students, tutoring allows me to focus on a single student's particular needs. It's more personal and engaging for both of us. I think we're all happiest when learning something--I know I am--and sharing that positive experience with students is why I became a teacher.

I submitted a PERSUASIVE essay to persuade the reader into believing your opinion. I wasn't really looking to hear that I should practically change the topic because the tutor had a different view. It is about your opinion.

My tutor worked really well with the very little I gave. He was very intuitive to see that I was lacking inspiration and direction. Was less about the thesis and more about finding what I wanted to point out about the story. Gave me a lot of food for thought and I have a better idea of how I want to go about it!
