01. Overview

What the school is known for:

You get a lot of bang for your buck at Cal Poly Pomona. With its “good reputation” and “general affordability,” this large public school attracts career-oriented students across a range of engineering and applied science majors. “Linking theory and practice in all disciplines,” Cal Poly Pomona’s educational philosophy is to “learn by doing.” Students appreciate the “fast-paced, hands-on approach to education,” in which “Each subject is taught using real world applications. This allows Cal Poly Pomona students to succeed immediately in industry.” The “connection from [the] classroom to the real world” is furthered by the school’s “strong focus on group projects,” frequent lab assignments, and great local “industry connections” for internship and job leads. A current student enthuses, “The opportunities available to us are impressive. I’ve had three successful internships, including one at the jet propulsion laboratory.” While there are diverse teaching styles (and inconsistent quality) within the school’s large faculty, “Overall the professors at Cal Poly Pomona are very dedicated to their work and eager to help.” Classes are technical and challenging, but “There are a lot of programs in place to help students with their courses,” including peer tutoring.

06. Student Body

What students say:

Cal Poly’s 20,000 undergraduates are a “very diverse” bunch. Though “most students are from California,” you get “a little bit of everything” on this bustling campus, from the “geeky engineer” to those “trying to be hipsters.” With so much diversity, “Everyone has a spot in one or more groups,” and refreshingly, Cal Poly “students are "real" people. Most of them work or have families.” Despite active Greek organizations, “Most people do not party” at Cal Poly, preferring to focus on their education. On this campus, “There is a common determination to work hard to prepare for our future.” Overall, it is “friendly atmosphere,” in which most people are “studious and polite, while not entirely outgoing.”

08. Campus Life

What students say:

Students at Cal Poly Pomona love their “gorgeous campus” in Southern California, which not only boasts an “amazing” library, but wonderful recreational facilities, like “arcades, [a] pool, ping pong, swimming, basketball courts, and large grassy areas for other sports.” There are “all kinds of activities in and around the Pomona area;” for example, many “people go snowboarding in the winter and go to the beach in spring.” Culturally, “Downtown Pomona is currently revitalizing and has a lot of cool places to chill and drink and eat,” and “L.A. is (obviously) an incredible place to be able to hang out on the weekends.” Though there is a growing residential population, most Cal Poly students are “commuters who work and go to school,” and are therefore generally removed from campus life. If you want a more typical college experience, “You have to put yourself out there and find an organization to join.” Fortunately, “There are many clubs at the school and so there are many opportunities to get to know people who have similar interests.” A current student attests, “I found that getting involved on campus is what made life at Cal Poly Pomona such a great experience.”
