Academics

Students searching for a school that offers a “quality and challenging education,” may want to consider The City College of New York. Of course, many students are initially drawn in by CCNY’s “lower than average tuition,” as well as the school’s “commitment to provid[e] opportunities to all...students no matter [their] race or background.” When it comes to academics, undergrads love that City College offers a “broad curriculum.” Additionally, they are quick to mention that the “science[s] at CCNY are rigorous” and boast that “the Engineering School is one of the best public schools.” No matter your major, you’re likely to have classes led by professors who students say are a “true gift to the school.” Most agree that their instructors are good at fostering “discussion and engagement” and “will help you in any way they can to achieve your goals.” They truly “go above and beyond for their students in terms of making time and really listening.”

Student Body

Simply put, “CCNY’s student body is one of the most diverse in the country.” Undergrads here come from “all around the world” and it’s rather routine to hear “many languages... spoken on campus.” One student heartily agrees “I’ve met so many peers from so many backgrounds, I’ve lost count.” Many also stress that this diversity extends across all “racial and socioeconomic” lines as well. As another undergrad further explains, “The university draws people of incredible intellect who are maybe economically challenged and allows them to excel.” A few undergrads do lament that “most students do not linger on campus when they’re finished with their classes” so you really have to “put in the effort to make friends at CCNY.” Fortunately, students assure us that “if you join clubs or become more involved with the opportunities the school provides, it’s much easier to make meaningful connections.” Plus, the consensus is that most people who attend are “very friendly and supportive.” This is bolstered by a non-traditional student who concludes, “I was petrified to return and be the oldest in most if not all of my classes. The student body made me feel comfortable from day one.... Everyone has treated me with respect and as a fellow peer.”

Campus Life

There’s no denying that CCNY is a “commuter school,” so it’s common to see “people come, go to class, and leave.” Nevertheless, there’s plenty to enjoy both on the “beautiful and safe campus” and in the city at large. Undergrads appreciate that many clubs and organizations “offer multiple resources and host seminars to learn about internships and potential research opportunities.” Groups range from those interested in sustainability to a pre-law club, salsa club, swimming club, video game club, and so much more. The college itself also hosts numerous events such as the annual CCNY Poetry Festival. Further, it offers a handful of “fun workshops ranging from cooking to arts and crafts” as well as meditation classes. And, of course, CCNY students have all of New York City at their fingertips. As this individual shares, “Exploring the different attractions (such as the pop up stores in Bryant Park or the museums) and various restaurants in NYC with my friends or significant other is my favorite thing to do.”
