Randolph-Macon College (RMC)

Randolph-Macon College, a historic Virginia institution, offers a rigorous liberal arts education distinguished by its commitment to a “focus on well-rounded individuals.” Its thoughtfully designed core curriculum incorporates experiential learning—such as field study or service learning—alongside a capstone experience, while also providing students with “many outside-of-class opportunities to interact with their departments, including workshops, guest lectures, and other educational events.” The college’s “mini-mester” January Term (J-Term) is often devoted to study abroad programs or internships, and as one student notes, “being able to travel with your professors during J-term to explore a country that they know well is an experience that most don’t get.” Students also benefit from accessible professional development resources like the Edge Boot Camp and leadership training, where many find that “the resources, connections, workshops, and staff are incredible [and] truly help in all aspects of getting you ready for the real world.” Strong career outcomes are further supported by “a powerful alumni connection,” through which students “get great support in terms of looking for internships and jobs for after graduation.” Faculty emphasize applied learning, integrating opportunities such as “labs that are specifically designed for students to gain a hands-on experience,” and even immersive classroom simulations, including a political science course where students “roleplay as members of Congress to make and pass bills!” The college’s small class sizes foster the “ability to have personal relationships with professors,” and it is “extremely easy to get in touch with most professors, and to talk to them about things, whether it be about classwork or the course itself…or just general things.” As one student reflects, “Because of some of my professors, I have been able to discover some passions which I would have never had without them.”

RMC students “are well-rounded individuals who are taught to think for themselves.” The mix of students includes “in-state and out-of-state students, people of all races, and people from different walks of life,” as well as a good number of athletes and “a substantial commuter, transfer, and neurodivergent student population.” There is also “a vibrant queer community here,” and students “put a huge emphasis on involvement and belonging.” One vouches, “Students are allowed to be themselves and explore all of their interests.” Most “are welcoming, incredibly friendly, and skilled at their passions,” and find that “everyone on campus is very nice and understanding.” Since RMC is a smaller campus, “once you see one person, you see them everywhere for the rest of your time on campus,” which provides more of a chance to “collaborate and work with them,” as well as build friendships.

Students say that RMC fosters a close-knit environment “with a big emphasis on campus life,” where “there is always something to do on campus to make sure you don’t feel alone.” There “are a lot of clubs [and] events on campus that [help students] to socialize beyond the classroom,” including a semiannual campus-wide community service day during which students “go around our college town and do jobs for local residents, such as yard work and housework.” The recreation center serves as a lively hub and “is always packed with people playing basketball, volleyball, or working out,” and intramurals are a favorite among students seeking both competition and camaraderie. Many also embrace the outdoor opportunities offered by the school, “where students can go on hikes, go rock climbing…and more.” Students at RMC “have a lot of pride in their school; it’s impossible to go a single day on campus without seeing at least three people wearing RMC merch.” Overall, the atmosphere is vibrant and social: “People connect with each other often, and there are always groups of people walking around campus or doing something fun together.”
