Academics

Juniata College is a private liberal arts college located in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. The college is named after the Juniata River. The school has “excellent science programs,” and a few students say that there need to be “more resources [for] non-science programs.” However, even students not majoring in science get access to some great facilities, with theater students exclaiming, “The theater program is unlike any other in country” and praising their new Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts. At Juniata, students can design their educational plan with the college’s Program of Emphasis. Many students do so, about 30 percent. Those interested in a specific established program—something like accounting or chemistry—can use an existing designated Program of Emphasis. All students have the option of working with two faculty advisors. The “outstanding education” is built on a bedrock of strong faculty members who offer “superior education through meaningful personal interaction.” Most class sizes tend to be fairly small, and though some classes are “tough to get in to because there is only one professor for a certain subject,” many agree that they love the attention that each professor gives and that the teachers “really go out of their way” to help students succeed and “value student success as much as the student does.” Success, however, doesn’t come without a price at Juniata, with a large amount of the students agreeing that their “good grades do not come without effort,” but that the class load is “challenging, but not overwhelming.”

Student Body

Students tend to describe themselves as “driven” and “passionately interested in their subjects,” though they also take pride in their “laid-back” attitudes, saying they “know how to balance fun and work.” During the week students “tend to buckle down and get their work done.” A lot of “exchange students from around the world” come to Juniata College to pursue their education. Students agree that “everyone fits in somewhere” at Juniata College because “people are accepted not despite their differences, but because of them.”

Campus Life

Students seem to agree that there “isn’t much to do in the town” of Huntingdon, but Juniata College makes up for it by making sure there is “always something to do” on campus. There are so many activities and groups on campus that some say, “It feels like you’re missing out if you go home for the weekend.” There are a “lot of traditions such as Storming of the Arch, Mountain Day, and Madrigal” that have been around the campus for decades and help bring students together. For instance, during Mountain Day, classes are canceled, and students and faculty are shuttled to a state park near the school where there are lunches, nature walks, and various games being played, and neither group knows when exactly it is going to be until the morning of the event. While there might be a lot of activities to do on campus, “if you want to party you can find one.” If you want to just relax with your fellow students, “Raystown Lake is only twenty minutes away,” where many students like to go and relax. Back on campus, many students seem to think that the “dorms and food” need improvement, but believe that the academic experience they receive outweighs those drawbacks.
