United States Naval Academy (USNA)

Students at the United States Naval Academy aren’t just students; “they are future Naval and Marine Corps officers being trained under constant pressure, responsibility, and accountability.” The USNA offers “elite education [and] training opportunities” that are “completely free” to students. Upon graduation, midshipmen, as all USNA students are called, earn a Bachelor of Science and will “commission into either the US Navy or Marine Corps” as officers. Coursework leans toward STEM subjects but also includes “a wide variety of classes, ranging from Arabic to aeronautics.” Students note that “every class is tied to real-world application. Even math-heavy courses are centered around military systems that are used.” Classes are taught by a “mix of military and civilian professors, leading to a wide range of experience.” One midshipman recalls: “I took a course on ethics that was instructed by a retired Navy SEAL, who really invested in the class….It’s enlightening to learn valuable skills from those who have had such unique and difficult experiences.” Midshipmen regularly take over 17 units per semester alongside “graded leadership responsibilities, inspections, and professional training,” and rely on supportive academic staff who “ensure you can succeed.” Overall, students agree that “the workload is extremely high, but the call to serve demands the best, and the tough work-life balance prepares you to lead in times of trial.”

The Naval Academy attracts “people who want to serve a greater purpose than themselves.” One midshipman says, “We all go through basic training together, which is an incredible bonding experience. I am an only child, and a lot of my friends here are like my brothers and sisters.” And “because everyone comes from different congressional districts due to the nominations process, we have people from everywhere around the country, from all walks of life. Whether you’re a big athlete or big into books, you will find your group of people here.” One student adds, “I know world record holders, rodeo stars, incredible athletes, and Rhodes Scholars. I know people who want to be snake-eaters, jet pilots, divers, lawyers, and president.” Across all pursuits, “midshipmen go above and beyond in every aspect of their lives.” One student captures the ethos best, saying, “My peers are [among] the smartest, fittest, and most caring people that I know, and I am so glad to be surrounded with them each day.”

“Life at the United States Naval Academy is structured, demanding, and very full—but also uniquely rewarding.” As one student explains, “Every Midshipman has mandatory breakfast and lunch, wears a Navy uniform to school every day, and is expected to be clean-shaven with cut hair and clean rooms at all times throughout the week.” Balancing everything can be challenging. “Sometimes I neglect studying for a quiz so I can go on a run. Sometimes I submit a homework late because I need to discuss a subordinate’s recent problematic behavior,” admits one student. At USNA, “time management isn’t optional—it’s a survival skill.” Yet the Academy offers unique opportunities that make the demands worthwhile. Clubs include the Combat Arms Team, the Drum and Bugle Corps, and the Naval Academy Wargaming Society, which enjoys “touring the Pentagon and other intelligence community facilities.” The Glee Club performs at presidential inaugurations and funerals and has “performances with world-renowned symphonies.” Local families volunteer to sponsor midshipmen; “having a home-cooked meal and a couch to relax on provides a much-needed mental break,” says one. In short, “every person here balances a full academic load with military duties, physical training, and leadership roles, which creates a culture where discipline, teamwork, and resilience are not buzzwords, but daily expectations.”

Midshipmen life is very difficult, but “the rewards are so great in four short years.” “It [is] a fantastic opportunity to serve my country and to secure a fantastic education and job immediately after I finish my undergraduate degree,” says one midshipman. Those who make it through all four years receive a Bachelor of Science degree and then are commissioned as Ensigns in the Navy or Second Lieutenants in the Marine Corps, and must fulfill a minimum military commitment of five years.
