Students Say

Students choose Mississippi College School of Law for its rigorous academics, close-knit community, geographic location, and “values rooted in the teachings of Christ.” Students who enroll join “a very tight-knit academic community” with an administration that’s “easily accessible and willing to help” whenever needed. Though a few students note that some of the facilities are a bit outdated, they also acknowledge that “there is a remodel of the school…in the works that should be completed in a few years.” And while the library is “on the smaller side,” the “staff is extremely helpful and ensures that students are well versed in how to take full advantage of the resources available.” Many students speak highly of the new administration’s increased transparency and student input: “On any given day, Dean Anderson will be out and about the school and eager to listen to students' concerns or comments.”
When it comes to academics, students report that “1L courses are strict, Socratic [and designed with a] clear curriculum and objectives.” In addition, “1Ls are set up to learn and test in [a] way that will prepare [them] for [the] bar exam.” Beyond bar prep, students appreciate that many of the instructors are from the surrounding legal community. As this student elaborates, “I am in a trial practice class currently taught by two sitting Mississippi Supreme Court Justices. Having the ability to listen to not one, but two individuals on the highest court in Mississippi on a weekly basis is irreplaceable.” Additionally, students also benefit from their ability to earn certificates through elective courses. Another individual explains, “I am going to receive a business and commercial law certificate” through classes focused on federal tax, corporate and partnership tax, government contracts, and antitrust laws. Ultimately, regardless of their specific course load, students are taught by “equitable and caring” professors who encourage “lots of open conversation.” And while they may “set the bar high, [they] give you all of the tools necessary to reach [it].”

Campus Life

Students Say

MC Law’s relatively small size helps it foster an environment that “feels like a family.” As one student shares, “There is always someone to greet you with a smile, and I typically look forward to going to school.” A classmate concurs, adding, “While we are competitive and want to finish on top, everyone tries to help [each] other because we genuinely want everyone to succeed.” Of course, it’s easy to build strong relationships given that “there are lots of clubs and out-of-school activities.” Students can join over 30 organizations ranging from the International Law Society to Ducks Unlimited, a wetlands conservation group, as well as participate in numerous clinics such as the Veterans Legal Aid Clinic.
Life here is also heavily informed by the school’s location in downtown Jackson. As this budding legal scholar explains, “Being in a capital city, there [are numerous] opportunities to have great legal experiences during law school. You are within walking distance of the State Capitol building, the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, the Attorney General's office, and many private [law] firms.” Another classmate speculates that “easily 50 percent of the state’s attorneys and lawmakers [are] either working or living within five miles of campus.” As a result, students here have ample “access to internships and externships” and can easily launch their legal careers.
