Students widely agree that their peers are “incredibly collaborative and supportive in every sense of the word.” This description reflects an often-cited “culture of care” at Rice that fosters “a ‘pact’ between all the student and faculty community to [keep] each other safe.” Many attribute this environment in part to the residential college system, which helps them connect with a wide range of people and build friendships across disciplines, noting that having “friends from diverse backgrounds and different majors makes it very supportive and less competitive.” The structure also creates “a lot of pockets of people with different interests and habits,” ensuring that “everyone is able to settle with a group that matches their interests.” And one student shares, “You’ll meet people who are grinding through problem sets and then immediately switching to band practice, club meetings, or just hanging out at the colleges.” This “sneaky smart and extremely motivated” student body is broadly regarded as “extremely passionate, intelligent, and hardworking,” as well as “very outgoing and compassionate.” As another student puts it neatly: “Although we are competitive in academics, this is very much outweighed by the amount of encouragement received by everyone. We all push each other to be better.”

Rice’s wooded campus “is absolutely gorgeous,” and students embrace the many opportunities to connect and unwind, from “college parties, themed events, intramural sports, and traditions like Beer Bike that bring the entire community together” to exploring the shops and restaurants in nearby Rice Village. First-year students are assigned to one of eleven residential colleges where they remain throughout their time on campus, a system that “provides a welcoming community to new students that lasts all the way to graduation.” These colleges also provide much of the day-to-day structure, including shared meals and close-knit social networks. Involvement is the norm at Rice, with most students participating in “some intramural sport, a club related to their major, or research.” Students also engage in “the many internships, jobs, and volunteer opportunities available in the surrounding area.” One student adds, “I think it’s impossible to find someone who is doing academics only.” This level of engagement is supported by “a strong culture of doing things together,” which means that “studying often turns into group work, late-night snack runs, or just hanging out and talking.” With so many academic and social opportunities available, students ultimately “try to find the ambitious people’s version of work-life balance.”

The Center for Career Development offers résumé reviews, mock interviews, and internship and externship resources both virtually and in person, with availability for drop-ins or personalized appointments scheduled on the Handshake platform. In addition to the weekly newsletter it sends to all students, the center also provides faculty and peer advising, alumni mentorship, career workshops, and campus recruiting and career expos. Students can register for the ProfessionOwl Program (POP), which utilizes a roadmap to help students identify, build, and associate their skills with relevant career goals. The Career Development website offers virtual tools, timelines, and guides for students to explore opportunities and network with fellow Owls on Sallyportal. Students note that the thriving workforce in Houston is also “very beneficial [with] so many resources around…for internships and research” and can provide a seamless transition from classes to careers. One student claims, “There are more internships available than there are students on campus.” But assistance doesn’t end with graduation: The School of Continuing Studies is also available to all lifelong learners who wish to continue personal and professional development even after they’ve left the university. Upon graduating, students surveyed at PayScale.com reported a median starting salary of $84,900, and 53 percent of alumni felt their work has a meaningful impact.
