Loyola University New Orleans goes above and beyond its academics, with students calling out how “the emphasis on social justice and community service really sets us apart…it’s about using our knowledge to make a positive impact.” That speaks to “the Jesuit values at the foundation of the school,” which enrollees say produce “caring, compassionate, serving individuals who will make their communities better.” To that end, there are “a lot of resources overall to make sure [you] as a whole person [are] taken care of,” and students “feel supported to succeed by this school.” Alumni in particular are “genuinely engaged and accessible,” and there is “a strong culture of mentorship that encourages students to reach out, ask questions, and seek guidance.” Another place where the school excels is with an “exceptionally small cohort [that] allows for comprehensive, personalized support and an intimate learning environment.” The accordingly small class sizes and the “deeply invested” professors ensure that “students are challenged intellectually while being supported academically and personally.” Many are said to be “always looking for undergraduate researchers and promoting opportunities to their students,” and faculty “really tries to integrate professionalism into the classrooms.” Teaching techniques are up to the professor: some “bring guest stars into the lectures to shine a light on what they do,” some incorporate “research, field trips, heavy discussion, [and] seminars,” and some focus on “community engagement, social justice, and the New Orleans environment.” A satisfied student says, “There is no uniform way a class is run at Loyola and that is how it should be.”
