University of South Florida (USF)

The University of South Florida is a public research university offering its students a “strong research environment, diverse and inclusive campus community, and strategic location in a rapidly growing metropolitan area.” The school has three campuses across Florida, with the main one in Tampa, and popular programs in nursing, public health, and engineering. Students highlight the “job fairs, study abroad opportunities, on-campus internships, and an abundant supply of resources for almost any situation you can imagine,” including “free resources [for] students, whether it be related to academia, mental health, or physical health.” Administrative processes are similarly streamlined, as “the general processes of creating schedules, paying fees, and other primary obligations are made easy,” and “staff respond quickly to questions.” Technology-enhanced learning is highly prevalent, and “many professors use interactive platforms, simulations, and digital tools that make the material more engaging,” and implement tools like “virtual labs, online practice modules, [and] collaborative digital projects” outside the classroom. USF has “impressive teachers who know how to approach a subject well,” and faculty “try to get people to take an experience-based education route whenever they can,”—as illustrated by one sustainable tourism class that “made [students] be a tourist for a day and see where sustainability could be viewed.” This commitment to hands-on learning extends to research as well, and USF’s “collaborative, forward-thinking atmosphere where students…are encouraged to innovate, research, and solve real-world problems” reflects an institution that takes both academic rigor and student support seriously.

The “genuinely diverse and welcoming” student body fuels an environment where students are “constantly surrounded by people with different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, and that makes campus life feel open and dynamic.” A strong international student contingent “contributes to the richness of culture and language on campus,” and students note “there are always events to celebrate each country, and a lot of inclusion and help from the university.” The sizable number of STEM and pre-health students leads one student to remark that “there’s a strong, focused energy of ambition as people prepare for medical school, research, and engineering careers.” Yet this “super diverse, hardworking, and always on-the-go” group still takes the time to be “welcoming and inviting,” with one student adding, “The campus culture itself is calm—group projects rarely turn into drama, and most people default to cooperation instead of conflict.” It is a dynamic that one student captures well: “What makes USF unique is how collaborative and down-to-earth everyone is. Students genuinely want to help each other succeed.”

USF “has a lot of pride in their sports culture,” and games “are a great environment and way to meet new people as well as feel a sense of school spirit”—there is even a new 35,000-seat stadium on the way. That energy carries over into everyday life, as “the on-campus recreation center is very popular,” and many students “use the gym or intramural sports as their main break from everything else.” Beyond athletics, there is “an insane amount of clubs and social events that are provided through the school itself, along with those that are student-formed and led,” with enough variety to “cater to everyone’s interests and make everyone feel included and at home.” Meals are not hard to find, as these clubs often organize “events sharing useful information and usually providing food,” and the university also throws “a lot of events hosted on campus like Bulls Nite Out, or Patio Tuesday, where students can connect and do crafts while having free food.” Taken together, “life at USF feels like this mix of being busy but also finding little moments to enjoy the campus.”

USF students tend to do well on the job market—with good reason. After all, they can tap into “a large number of resources,” like advisors, and as Career Services, which, as one undergrad notes, “is extremely useful” and well capable of “help[ing] you narrow down your options in terms of career interests and experience.” Additionally, USF sponsors “many career and internship fairs which are wonderful for networking with companies and employers.” Another student readily agrees with the hype, sharing, “I receive at least one email every single day about a career fair, special guest forum, or available internship happening at USF, which really relieves some stress.”
