Career Experience
As an astronomy researcher studying nearby galaxies, I applied all sorts of math to astronomy problems: algebra, trigonometry, geometry, calculus and even statistics. During my career, I taught astronomy to undergraduate non-science majors, many of whom were intimidated by math. Teaching them helped me understand that every student has different needs, strengths and learning styles. As a private tutor, I have also helped students with learning difficulties, such as anxiety and ADHD. I understand how their diagnosis presents unique challenges to mastering math.
I Love Tutoring Because
I love to help students become confident problem solvers. Often students know more than they realize, even when they feel totally lost. Sometimes they need a step-by-step review of a problem, but sometimes they just need a nudge in the right direction. A good tutor is a good listener and can identify what approach is best for each student.
