Career Experience
Following graduate school, I was a visiting assistant professor of biology and anatomy & physiology courses, including laboratory, lecture, and online classroom settings. Following this appointment, I moved with family to Wisconsin, where I was a postdoctoral research associate. I am currently transitioning to a new postdoctoral research position that more closely aligns with my graduate research and long-term career interests.
I Love Tutoring Because
though this may be cliche and overstated, I have always enjoyed helping others! From my early childhood with multiple older siblings and one younger brother, I was exposed to both sides of the spectrum of learning everyday tasks - being shown how to do things as well as guiding my much younger sibling through milestone events like riding a bike or helping with homework. I also have a naturally patient personality that allows me to adapt to others' personalities and learning styles. Progressing through my academic and professional career, I found myself gravitating toward tutoring and teaching roles and first recognized my passion for instruction when I was a graduate teaching assistant. I really enjoyed the one-on-one and small group sessions which allowed for more fine-tuned tailoring of complex information to students with diverse ways of comprehension, and the "aha" moment (as many describe it) is certainly rewarding. When I transitioned to my faculty role where class sizes and responsibilities grew larger, I still found the same personalized discussions during office hours or supplemental review sessions. There really is a notable difference between students who just go through the motions and those who are curious and actively involved in their education. As an instructor at any academic level can likely relate to, I thoroughly enjoy paving the way for their learning process!
